THE PEOPLE OF FAITH - a timeline

1864 to 1978:

  • The building was first used by Headingley Hill Congregational Church. Its first minister was Rev Alfred Holden Byles, who was inducted (installed) in August 1867. Rev Byles (1840-1911), the second son of a Bradford newspaper proprietor, publisher and printer, was married to Louisa Davids and they had seven children, two of whom became Roman Catholic priests. The elder son, Father Thomas Roussel Davids Byles, was on board ‘The Titanic’ when it sank in 1912 and is remembered for his heroism as the ship went down (for more information, see websites: http://fatherbyles.com/byles.htm, http://byles familytree.com/Byles,Fr.Thomas.asp).
  • During the Congregational Church’s lifetime, many baptisms, weddings and funerals took place, as well as regular worship services. The first recorded baptism was in 1870. (For more information, see website: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk)
  • In 1972, The United Reformed Church was formed by the union of the Congregational Church in England and Wales with the Presbyterian Church of England and a number of Churches of Christ. Headingley Hill Congregational Church so became Headingley Hill United Reformed Church.
  • In 1978 the congregation at Headingley Hill joined together with St Columba Presbyterian Church to form the new Headingley St Columba United Reformed Church (for more information, see website: www headingley-urc.co.uk).

1996 to date:

  • People in the Leeds Housegroup, which was part of Bradford Church from 1975 to 1981, met together on Sundays at Church House, North Parade, Bradford, and during the week in housegroups in different areas of Leeds.
  • City of God in Leeds, later renamed City Church Leeds, met together from 1981 to 1996 in rented premises in the centre of Leeds (such as schools, colleges, universities, theatres, and even Leeds Town Hall) on Sundays, and in housegroups in homes around the city during the week.
  • City Church Leeds relocated in 1996 to its present home in Headingley where the church meets together on Sundays in the main building, and in life groups in various parts of Leeds during the week.
